Former Journal journalist dies aged 98

Edith Bacon, a former Newcastle Journal journalist, has died. She was 98.

Formerly Edith Base, she started work as a reporter at The Journal in 1919, and later edited the women's page.

In 1941 she left the paper to take a wartime post as women's press liaison officer at the Ministry of Labour HQ in London.

She was married to fellow Journal reporter Cecil Boyd Bacon, who died in 1989.
