Gazette editor moves to Chronicle

Paul Robertson is to leave the editorship of the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette for the editor's post at the Newcastle Chronicle.

He will take over from Alison Hastings, who is leaving the Chronicle after six years to move to Liverpool.

Paul's replacement at the Gazette, which he has edited for two years, has not yet been announced.

Paul, (35), was born in the north east and said Teesside would always hold a special place in his heart.

He said: "I am proud of the paper's achievements, which have been recognised with our nominations for three national awards.

"I look forward to working with the Chronicle team to build on the excellent foundations which are already in place."

Gazette Media Company managing director Alastair MacColl paid tribute to Paul and praised the community focus he had developed at the paper.

He said: "Under Paul's leadership the paper has gone from strength to strength. In particular, we have developed a pivotal role as champions of all the communities that we serve.

"This is clearly characterised by our work alongside a whole range of partners to help regenerate the Tees Valley under the Tees Pride banner."

Paul began his career in journalism at the Morpeth Herald and held various roles at the Journal, including deputy editor.

  • Alison is relocating to join her partner David Fleming, who runs the National Museums and Galleries in Liverpool.

She said: "It's a big wrench to leave the Chronicle after all this time. It is one of the country's great newspapers and I feel privileged to have looked after it."
