Journalists tied up in armed raid on newspaper HQ

Editorial staff on a late shift at the Peterborough Evening Telegraph were tied up by armed robbers in a raid on their Priestgate headquarters.

Computer and photographic equipment were taken when a group of men armed with baseball bats broke in at around 11pm yesterday.

The staff were tied up for an hour while the building was searched and then the raiders - numbering three or four - drove off with the haul in a white van, as well as stealing an Astra car from the premises.

The journalists were uninjured but shaken by their ordeal - and returned to work today. Police say they managed to free themselves after the raiders had fled.

Editor Kevin Booth said today: "Our overriding concern is for the safety and wellbeing of the four journalists who were subjected to this ordeal.

"They showed immense bravery in the face of danger and like true professionals were back at work today and determined to get the newspaper out on the streets."

The company is to review security in the light of what happened last night.

The value of the haul has not yet been revealed.
