Bullying resource bids for award

A website that provides support and advice for bullied children is in line for a prestigious industry award.

www.bullying.co.uk is run by Yorkshire Evening Post sub-editor Liz Carnell, and is receiving tremendous feedback.

The website, also a charity, is through to the final of the New Statesman/BT New Media Awards 2001, one of the last three in the Online Communities section of the awards.

The site offers advice for children, parents and teachers on all aspects of bullying, to help the different parties deal with the problem.

It is also a resource for anyone who needs to take action against their local authority, if they feel more could be done: Liz set up the site after her own struggle with Yorkshire County Council.

The site went "live" in April 1999 and had more than 44,000 visitors in its first year.

Liz said: "We've had more than 6,800 emails in 27 months so it's lovely to have our work appreciated in this way."

But the people behind its success won't be travelling to London for the awards final.

"Unfortunately we can't afford it because it costs around £300 per month to run the charity and our only income is about £30 per month," said Liz.

"I foot the bill for the rest and train travel and a night in a hotel is beyond our means."
