Beehive buzzing in Leicester

The Leicester Mercury is celebrating achieving 250 public websites for its Beehive Community Network with a publicity surge to encourage more groups to sign up.

The initiative was highlighted in a two-page spread in the paper to show how community groups are benefiting from the free service.

The Focus article explained why the Beehive is buzzing - and how people can make it work for their own local charity, group or society.

Shepshed Albion football club, Anstey Parish Church and the Turning Point Women's Centre are among the groups that have their own ship window on the Internet, thanks to the scheme, run in conjunction with the Mercury.

The 250 community groups accessible on the world wide web cover all parts of Leicestershire.

The landmark was achieved only a few months after the Beehive celebrated its first anniversary in December.

Community publishing co-ordinator Kerry Williams said: "Having a Beehive website benefits groups by increasing the potential for publicity, raising public awareness of the group and promoting services.

"They can help attract new members and recruit volunteers and staff.

"Groups can also share information and communicate with other members of the Beehive Community Network on the site's bulletin boards."
