Observer gives charity front page backing

The Great Barr Observer has pledged its support to a cause which helps children with asthma.

The George Coller Memorial Fund was set up 18 months ago in memory of a three-year-old boy who died of asthma.

His mum set up the charity to raise awareness and has so far raised money for vital life-saving equipment and to fund an asthma nurse to work with children across the West Midlands.

To show its support, the Observer is displaying the words 'Supporters of the George Coller Memorial Fund' under its masthead to remind readers of the charity.

Observer editor Mark Eustace said: "Asthma is a very common complaint, it affects thousands - but until recently I had no idea of just how serious it was, and how many youngsters have to struggle day to day on their own just to keep breathing.

"That's why the Observer believes this is a very worthwhile charity, and with such a moving story as its base, we knew we just had to get on board."

George's mum, Kim Douglas, said she was pleased that the Observer had decided to help raise awareness of asthma.

She said: "We were all so shocked by the lack of facilities, help and support for children with asthma across the country.

"The need is out there yet not enough is done to help children and their families live and cope with asthma - this is the issue.

"Asthma is not a registered need. I think it is awful that my son had to die for the charity to be here, trying to gain recognition."

  • Asthma is responsible for 1,500 deaths each year.
