News-hungry kids make their own headlines at the Mail

Budding newshounds from around Yorkshire have again been making their own headlines as part of the Hull Daily Mail's Kids' Journalist Club.

A group of news-hungry youngsters gave up part of their summer holiday to visit the Mail offices and take part in the paper's latest two-day course designed to introduce children to the world of newspapers.

During the two days the children were taught basic reporting and photography skills to help them produce their own miniature newspaper and were also given a tour of the offices.

Steven Taylor, (nine), who took part in the course, said: "It has been brilliant, absolutely fantastic. We learned lots of new skills such as feature writing, photography and computer skills.

"We also watched videos and got the chance to produce our own newspaper. This was a tough job. We had to decide what news we wanted to put into the paper. We then had to find and write the news before a deadline.

"All the hard work was worthwhile when we saw the finished product. We felt proud of what we had achieved."

The paper's education services co-ordinator, Stuart Markham, said: "The course is a great chance for youngsters to learn skills which will be needed in their later education and future careers."

  • The next set of classes will be held at the Mail over the Easter holidays.
