Crime clusters around York have been mapped out in a link-up between the police and local press.
The idea is to warn people in the city that if they think “it won’t happen to me”, they could well be wrong.
The Evening Press maps show that a spate of burglaries over a six-day period have been confined to a handful of streets when police would normally expect an average of just four such crimes a week.
People are now being put in the picture about crime in the city with incidents highlighted on crime cluster maps.
Sergeant Richard Spedding said: “We don’t want people to become frightened about crime but we want them to be aware.
“By taking a few simple steps we can all work together to reduce crime.”
He also said police would be stepping up patrols in the area and targeting their known offenders.
There were also plans for a “target hardening” initiative where police would visit people at home to give crime prevention advice and practical help.
