The editor of the Lincolnshire Echo has been explaining to youngsters who read the paper how he decides what should go on its pages.

He replied in response to their questions as to why there weren't more limericks, jokes and riddles on the Echo's pages.

The youngsters, from a village junior school near Lincoln, wrote to Mike Sassi as part of their literacy lessons.

Head teacher Richard Hall said it was important for the children to learn how to write formal letters - and said they had noted stories in the Echo about shortcuts used for text-messaging and e-mail communication.

Mike Sassi wrote in the paper: "Of course, you are right in saying there could be more things in the Lincolnshire Echo for young people.

"Unfortunately, we are limited in the amount of space that is available to us so we are unable to give children more space in the newspaper at this time.

"However, we hope that you can use our material as a source of reading material.

"The newspaper is inexpensive and has loads of bits and pieces to interest all of you, even stories about your school.

"Of course, we will also try to publish work that you or any other school in Lincolnshire sends in.

"We are always pleased to publish what you think or material you have produced."
