Transatlantic joy for Gemma

South Wales Argus trainee Gemma Collins has won a £1,000 bursary to travel to the United States.

Reporter Gemma won the first Nick Lewis Memorial Trust Travel Bursary. Nick was a former Argus trainee who died last year at the age of 43 after a short, but brave, battle with cancer.

Gemma is planning to travel to Cleveland to report on the effect mass steel redundancies have had on the area and to compare it with Newport and Ebbw Vale, which have just seen nearly 2,000 steelworkers lose their jobs.

The 23-year-old joined the Argus from the postgraduate journalism studies course at the University of Wales, Cardiff, in 1999, and is currently awaiting the results of her National Certificate Exam.

Her bursary is one of four being made annually to trainee journalists in South Wales. Trustees were unanimous in awarding the bursary to Gemma.

Argus editor Gerry Keighley said: "We are delighted for Gemma. She fullydeserves this bursary and we look forward to some excellent reports from her visit to Cleveland."
