Licensees talk tough following Mail revelations

Licensees in Hull have vowed to introduce tough new measures to tackle drink-related violence following revelations in the Hull Daily Mail.

Earlier this week the Mail revealed a list compiled by Humberside Police of 84 late-night violent offences in the city centre which caused serious injury over a 12 month period.

The injuries, inflicted between March 2000, and March this year, included numerous cases of fractured jaws and skulls - as well as several ears being bitten off.

It was the first time ever that the police had made public such a comprehensive list.

At a meeting to discuss ways of addressing the problems, licensees pledged to look at a whole catalogue of measures, including:

  • Even more stringent checks on the identities of people suspected of being under-age drinkers.

  • Improved links with the city centre closed-circuit TV network.

  • Joint exclusion orders, to ensure a person banned from one venue is banned from them all.

Commenting on the Mail's article, Roy Dean, who attended the meeting, said: "All the licensees in this area are absolutely committed to developing a good nightlife in this part of town and not tolerating any trouble.

"Nobody is complacent about the problem, but not many people recognised the city centre they know in that article. A lot of licensees are working extremely hard to make sure they manage their premises really well.

"A whole year's worth of incidents gives the impression this is a wild west town, which it clearly isn't. You can come in and not witness any trouble."

He said the list was an "appalling catalogue of crime" but licensees and others were working together to make sure it did not get worse.
