A special edition of the Evening Courier has asked Calderdale people about what they feel is important to the area.
The paper has signalled the start of a wider debate and is calling on all its readers to join in.
The paper said: "Today, a special edition of the Evening Courier marked a watershed in our relationship with the people of Calderdale.
"We've always responded to local issues, providing an accessible forum for public debate.
"We have no ready-fixed agenda. We want, quite simply, to assess which quality of life issues really concern our readers.
"When we have done that we will help to tackle them."
The paper champions Calderdale as a "wonderful, friendly and vibrant" place but concedes it is not perfect by any means with scope for improvement in many directions and at many levels.
It told readers: "We must pull together, confident in the belief that things can change for the better.
"That belief in progress is what powered the rapid expansion of Halifax in the 18th and 19th centuries."
