Victims fears eased after Guardian intervention

A deaf mugging victim is feeling safer at home after the Sutton Guardian launched a search for a doorbell aid to ease her fears.

The woman appealed to the Guardian to find the device - which vibrates when the doorbell is pressed - because she was worried her attackers might come to get her.

After some inquiries by the London newspaper, an internet-based company that supplies aids to disabled people came forward.

She was overwhelmed when she heard about the generous offer from Disability Support to provide the device, which costs £80.

She said: "I am very happy that somebody has come forward to give me this gift."

The 49-year-old mum-of-two was robbed of £195 by two teenagers as she left a post office on May 14 - and she has been afraid to stay at home alone since the attack.

Her ordeal had been prolonged by her struggle to communicate the crime to police.

She had told the paper: "I do not sleep well and I keep having nightmares that someone is following me, trying to mug me."
