Newspaper websites are "user-unfriendly"

New media managers in the UK may be interested to hear the views of a top US web designer on American newspaper websites.

Jakob Nielsen told Editor and Publisher Online that the US sites had a lot to learn about "user experience".

"Their search engines are miserable and I don't think they have got a clue about usability," he said.

He added: "People are being treated like sheep on the Web today. What's relevant is the feeling of control."
