Running online 'up north'

The runners who made this year's Great North Run such a success are celebrated on the worldwide web.

The Northern Echo has published the name, position and time of every runner exclusively online for the first time in the paper's history.

www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk allows readers to search for the runners by surname from a full list, a list for the women's race or the wheelchair event.

New media editor Sarah Andrews said the web coverage was proving popular.

She said: "Even before the results were published we had hundreds of hits on this section of our website. A lot of people want to check on how friends and relatives fared in the event."

The site also gives handy links to the official website - www.onrunning.com - where readers can see the results in a list by time taken to complete the race.

And there is even an opportunity for competitors to print off a certificate to prove their running success.
