Hampshire Chronicle editor Alan Cleaver believes the e-paper could mean the end of newspapers as we know them.

The Winchester-based Chronicle, which celebrates its 228th birthday this week, is at the cutting edge of this new technology as the first British title to publish an e-paper.

The entire newspaper can be downloaded onto a pocket-sized computer, called an e-book, in a matter of seconds. One e-book can hold hundreds of e-newspapers.

It is the same system which horror writer Stephen King used to publish his latest novel.

Mr Cleaver told HoldTheFront Page: "I think in ten years' time wheneveryone has an e-book in their pocket, we'll look back and say: 'Do you remember newspapers?'"

The e-book revolution is sweeping America, but the technology won't arrive in the UK until next year.

Mr Cleaver believes the e-book will turn the newspaper publishing industry on its head, and when the e-book launches in Britain he says the Chronicle will be ready.
