Focus on the digital revolution

More than 100 editors from Britain's biggest regional newspaper publisher have been told that new media and the printed press can flourish side by side.

Ian Aiken, Digital Media Managing Director for the Newsquest group, said the challenge to Newsquest titles was to make their own websites more appealing and attractive to web surfers than the competition.

Speaking at the Newsquest Editorial Conference in Bradford, Mr Aiken added that there was no need for websites to "cannibalise" newspapers and he said the number of households going online - which was likely to increase thanks to digital television - showed that new media was vital to Newsquest's future.

The Newsquest Media Group owns 287 newspapers throughout the UK. Its US parent company is Gannett - which owns 74 daily American titles making it the biggest newspaper publisher in the US.
