Searching for a star

The Lancashire Evening Post has launched its third annual 'Search for a Star' contest.

The newspaper is running the event at the Charter Theatre in Preston to try to uncover the next big name in entertainment.

The competition originally attracted 130 acts which was whittled down to half that figure following auditions.

The judging panel included Post deputy editor Jane Clare along with influential figures from the local talent scene.

The highlight of the first heat came when 71-year-old Winifred Stevenson was forced to sing unaccompanied after a mix-up with the backing tape.

The singer won rapturous applause but missed out on the top prize which went to Daniella Gallagher.
