The chance to sponsor a school desk for £10 is being snapped up by readers of the Brentwood Gazette.

Its Adopt a Desk Campaign will benefit schoolchildren in India, where a little money can go a long way.

A whip-round at the paper itself raised enough cash to set the appeal on the right track.

Schools throughout Essex are already involved with the Stepping Stones project, which raises cash to supply desks, chairs, uniforms and books for schools in Madurai and its surrounding villages.

The campaign is being co-ordinated with help from the local Rotary Club.
