Post breaks Straw arrest story

The Nottingham Evening Post beat the national media to a story alleging that Home Secretary Jack Straw's brother had been charged with assault

The paper changed its front page for yesterday's final edition to carry the story by reporters Tom Whitehead and Tim Utton.

It said that 46-year-old William Straw was arrested the previous night after police were called to his home in Park Road, Bramcote, Notts. He was taken to Beeston police station and was later charged with common assault on a 16-year-old girl.

The paper had received an anonymous tip-off about the arrest.

It was the second Page 1 lead in a day for crime correspondent Tom Whitehead.

His early-editions splash was about a dog that died of a huge cocaine overdose. A postmortem established the cause of death after closed-circuit television cameras captured a man dumping the dog in the River Trent.

The early lead became a Page 1 picture story above the Straw revelation.
