Trinity makes second bid for TV news licence

Newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror has confirmed it is putting together a second bid for a regional TV pilot scheme.

Proposals to launch three pilot TV news projects – covering Wales, Scotland and the North East of England – were outlined in the Digital Britain report in the summer and will take over the provision of regional news on Channel 3 from 2013.

Trinity is planning to put together a consortium for the Wales licence which comes after last month's announcement that it had teamed up with the Press Association and Bob Geldof's Ten Alps to table a bid for the North East pilot.

The licences are due to be handed out in March.

Trinity Mirror's Media Wales division is based principally in Cardiff and publishes Wales on Sunday and dailies the Western Mail and South Wales Echo along with associated websites, magazines and the Celtic Series of weeklies covering neighbouring towns.

Media Wales will be competing against media producer Tinopolis, ITN and Wales Live, a joint venture between UTV and North Wales-based independent newspaper publisher NWN Media which revealed last week that it was entering the contest.

A spokesperson for Media Wales said: "We have been talking to a number of different organisations about our potential involvement in a consortium bid.

"Discussions are ongoing and I can confirm that Media Wales will be involved in a bid for the Wales pilot."
