Wanted man sends local paper new mug shot

A suspected burglar being hunted by police has sent a picture of himself to his local paper – complaining that he didn't like his previous mug shot.

In the 31 October edition of the South Wales Evening Post, Matthew Maynard appeared in a rogues gallery (below) alongside seven other suspects wanted in connection with a series of burglaries and assaults.

Although four of the group have been caught, Maynard, 23, is still on the run and sent a provocative shot of himself next to a police car to the newsdesk at the Swansea daily.

The photo – sent via mobile phone – formed the centre piece of today's front page under the headline 'YOU CHEEKY BURGLAR'.

The Evening Post says that police have declined to comment on the new photo.

An editorial in today's post says: "Burglary suspect Matthew Maynard obviously thinks a lot of himself.

"After his picture appeared in a rogues gallery on the front page of the Evening Post he sent us a different one aimed at taunting the police who are trying to catch him.

"The people of Swansea, however, will have a very different opinion of this man who somehow thinks it is amusing to be suspected of burglary.

"The sooner he is turned in the better."

The rogues gallery was issued by South Wales Police as part of an operation which saw more than 80 arrests take place during Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
