A handful of paid-for weeklies posted circulation increases in the latest round of ABC figures, with one shooting up 75.8pc.

The Ellon Times and Inverurie Herald Series saw its average weekly sales figures rise to 3,559 for the six-months ending June 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.

Other titles to welcome rises include the Mearns Leader and Kincardineshire Observer, which went up 17.8pc year-on-year, and the Shrewsbury Chronicle with a 45.1pc rise, although this is the first audit since it adopted the part paid-for, part-free model in April.

Archant's Weston and Somerset Mercury saw a rise of 4.4pc, with circulation up to 15,817, and the Uttoxeter Post and Times went up 1.2pc.
