MEN defends use of "shocking" picture

The Manchester Evening News has defended the use of a "shocking and horrific" picture showing a rookie cop with a twig in his eye after falling during a police chase.

The picture showing PC John Nash lying in a hospital bed became one of the most debated topics on the paper's website last week.

Online users sent their messages of support for the officer who refused to give up as he closed in on his first arrest despite his injuries.

But many felt the picture was too horrific to be seen and questioned the MEN's decision to show the full horror of the incident.

One reader wrote: "Thank you MEN for making me nearly throw up just as I was about to eat my lunch."

In a follow-up article published on Friday, assistant editor Ian Wood explained the thinking behind the decision to use the controversial picture.

"We thought long and hard about the use of this picture. It is clearly a disturbing image but, ultimately, the only way you can appreciate the full extent of this police officer's courage and dedication is to see the extent of his injury," he said.

"Simply saying he had a stick in his eye does not give a true impression.

"A key factor was that PC Nash was happy that we publish the image – if this had not been the case our decision would certainly have been different."

The MEN is now carrying out a poll on its website to gauge readers' views.
