World newspaper congress cancelled

The 62nd annual World Association of Newspaper annual congress has been cancelled. It was due to take place in India from 22 to 25 March with speakers from newspapers across the world. It is likely to be rescheduled for November.

As part of the congress the 16th World Editors Forum had also been due to take place where provisional guest speakers had included the editorial director of Trinity Mirror's regionals division Neil Benson. He was lined up alongside speakers from America and Italy to talk about how Trinity Mirror has integrated its newsrooms to handle 24-hour media.


The 2nd edition of the Editors' Codebook will be published next month both online and - subject to demand - in hard copy format. This official handbook puts the Code of Practice into the context of the case law developed by the Press Complaints Commission.

It has been updated to include rulings and guidance issued since 2005. The PCC is inviting personal purchasers to register interest in buying a hard copy at a special price £5 – e-mail tonia.milton@pcc.org.uk for more information.


Training days for freelancers are taking place over the coming months in Manchester. The one-day courses will cover finding clients, pitching ideas, chasing payments and other day-to-day factors which freelancers must deal with.

Courses run from 9.30am to 4.30pm on 13 February and 20 March. They cost £25, including lunch, and are held at the Manchester Digital Development Agency, in Portland Street. For more information and to sign up email frances.dredge@ntlworld.com.


The Gazette in Blackpool has launched a new picture archive featuring the work of some of its photographers.

The striking images feature everything from golfer Tiger Woods to a boat race on Fairhaven Lake, south of the Lancashire town.

They can be viewed on blackpoolgazette.co.uk and images will be available to buy on parent company Johnston Press' website photostoday.co.uk.
