Entries are now open for the 152nd International Print Exhibition, run by the Royal Photographic Society. More than 120 photos will be chosen for the touring exhibition with the jury including former creative director of Getty Images Lewis Blackwell.

Cash and a digital camera are on offer for prize winners as well as the honour of seeing their work exhibited throughout the UK for approximately a year. The deadline for entries is 4 February – for more information and an application form visit the Royal Photographic Society website.

A charity football match has been held in honour of a budding young journalist who died of bowel cancer, aged 24. Peter Fearn, from Derbyshire, died in October just three days after being diagnosed with the disease.

He completed a newspaper journalism course at Nottingham Trent University last summer and was looking for his first reporting job. Peter's parents and sister joined around 50 people at the charity match in Derbyshire, which began with a round of applause, with proceeds of around £550 going to Cancer Research UK.

Time is running out for writers wishing to enter the George Orwell prize for political prose. The annual awards, whose founder Sir Bernard Crick died last month, celebrate those who strive to achieve Orwell's ambition "to make political writing into an art".

There are prizes for journalism, a book and a new category for political blogs. Closing date for entries is 14 January with a shortlist announced on 25 March – for more details visit the Orwell Prize website.

Sixty journalists were killed during 2008 in the course of duty. But the annual report, published by Reporters Without Borders, shows a drop of over a third on last year's figure of 87.

One media assistant also lost their life, while 673 journalists were arrested and 929 were physically attacked or threatened.

The annual Renaissance Photography Prize closes for entries next week. The theme for this year's competition, which is open to all photographers, is 'Moments that Matter'.

Work by 60 finalists will be displayed at a private show in London, in March, and also included in a book about the event. Three category winners – emotion, the human body and world we live in – will share £5,000 in prizes.
