Liverpool Echo assistant editor Andrew Edwards is the new group editor of Merseyside Weeklies, combining the role with that of editor of the Southport Visiter.
The announcement is one of several editorial appointments to be made at Trinity Mirror North West as part of the move towards a single newsroom covering the morning, evening and weekly titles at its Liverpool centre.
Andrew succeeds Jane Daly who is taking early retirement as part of the shake-up after more than 40 years with the company.
He is taking up the role after more than 30 years in newspapers, including stints at the Echo, Western Daily Press, Manchester Evening News and Sunday Mirror. He began his career at the Western Telegraph Weekly in West Wales.
The other editorial announcements are:
Andrew Campbell becomes executive editor of the Liverpool Echo, stepping up from the deputy editor role. He has previous experience as assistant editor at the North Wales Daily Post, head of investigations with the Echo and as a producer on Channel One Television.
Alison Gow is appointed executive editor, digital. Alison's new role will be pivotal to editorial digital strategy across all Merseyside titles, companion sites and other digital media. She is presently deputy editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, a role she took after three years as news editor of the Liverpool Echo.
Richard Williamson, currently sports editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, takes on the role of head of production, Merseyside. Richard, who has recently celebrated 25 years with the company, has also served as editor of the Kop and Evertonian magazines and as production editor of the Echo.
Gary Bainbridge becomes head of design, Merseyside. A multi-award winning design journalist, Gary began his career with Trinity Mirror on the Merseymart and Star. He was responsible for the redesign of the Liverpool Daily Post in 2004 and for this year's redesign of the Echo. He will have a hands-on role in improving design of all Merseyside titles.
Two further appointments, executive editor Wirral and Liverpool weeklies, and executive editor, mediamix will be announced in due course.
As previously announced, Liverpool Echo editor Alastair Machray will become Merseyside editor-in-chief in addition to his existing role.
Mark Thomas, editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, will retain his role but will also become deputy editor-in-chief with wider responsibility across both titles.
