Great Grimsby Labour MP and former journalist Austin Mitchell has tabled an early day motion opposing Trinity Mirror's recently-announced staff pay freeze.

He calls regional and local newspaper "integral to the UK's communities" adding that "journalists should be paid a fair wage for their work".

The EDM has so far been signed by 17 MPs. A similar EDM opposing Trinity Mirror's plans to close district offices in Teesside has also been tabled by Ashok Kumar MP.

The Evening Chronicle, Newcastle, has been recognised for its year-long 'Go Green' environmental campaign. The Chronicle title was among the winners at the Environmental Press Awards run by the Press Gazette.

In awarding the Judges' Prize, the panel said: "Many local newspapers embarked on similar projects but the Chronicle stood out for the breadth of its coverage and the way its green initiatives and events involved journalists across the paper, the readers and other media for a year."

Judges include former Gloucestershire Echo editor Anita Syvret and Greenpeace communications director Ben Stewart.

A free training workshop on media coverage of asylum and refugee issues is taking place next week. Aimed at journalists, public relations workers and media officers, it forms part of the City of Refuge Community programme.

Archant's press officer Lisa Horton has left the company. Lisa, who is also deputy editor of Archant Network magazine and a former Norwich Evening News journalist, is joining the press office at the University of East Anglia.

The man credited with conducting the first qualitative study of regional newspaper readership has died aged 92.

Harry Henry's career included a spell on the board of the Thomson Organisation, which joined regional newspaper group Thomson Newspapers, firstly as director of marketing and latterly as deputy managing director.

He also worked for a number of industry and academic bodies such as the National Readership Survey and the Advertising Association.
