Liverpool Daily Post to scrap Saturday edition

The Liverpool Daily Post is to scrap its Saturday edition as part of the wider shake-up announced by Trinity Mirror North-West this afternoon.

The change to Monday-Friday publishing, which will take effect from February 2009, has been prompted by a desire to focus the morning title more on the needs of the weekday business audience.

Daily Post editor Mark Thomas said: "The big change our readers will notice is the end of Saturday production of the Liverpool Daily Post.

"This reflects the changing information needs of our affluent, business-led audience, who can also look forward to much stronger newspapers during the week, incorporating all their favourite weekend features.

"All the breaking news and sport will still be there on our website liverpooldailypost.co.uk throughout the weekend," he added.

The Post's newsroom is also being merged with that of the Liverpool Echo under the company's plans to streamline its operations.

This is not a matter of "a desire to focus the morning title more on the needs of the weekday business audience". The Saturday edition is being cut to save money.

Whilst I understand the need to control costs, this is a real shame and forces readers to take an alternative paper on a Saturday which will no-doubt drive down mid week sales as readers switch permanently to a new paper. Do not be fooled by the change in focus towards a weekday business audience, this is just a cost cutting exercise and one that does not add to the papers proposition but diminishes it.
