Stars and stripes masthead marks Obama triumph

The Birmingham Mail stole a march on the nationals yesterday by splashing on the latest pictures of new US president Barack Obama addressing his supporters.

The Trinity Mirror-owned title sought to catch readers' eyes with a rare 'stars and stripes' masthead following the election of America's first black president.

The evening title also scooped the nationals by wiping out its front page with the very latest picture of Mr Obama addressing thousands of supporters in Chicago, an image that missed all morning paper deadlines.

The headline: 'Obama: Let's change the world' also gave readers the latest coverage of the live election result by taking a line from Mr Obama's speech to the crowd, again an item missed by all national titles. The full speech was also immediately uploaded to birminghammail.net

Editor Steve Dyson said: "The timing was perfect for us to deliver the latest live news and pictures for our readers, and for us to make today's publication an historical, collectable item."

I see the cutbacks - sorry "improvements" - have already affected the paper's ability to cover local news...

God Bless Adam Smith. A real journalist who knows how to have a laugh. I think it's more of a shame that the only way he could report on this global issue was to pay his own way there and take annual leave. And let's not mention the fact he's one of the many clamouring for the exit at this 'newspaper'.
