Weekly newspaper ceases production after 126 years

Three Trinity Mirror weekly newspapers in the East Midlands have printed their final edition costing four jobs.

The 126-year-old paid-for Long Eaton Advertiser and the free Long Eaton Trader and Nu News, which served Melbourne and Castle Donnington, ceased production last week.

There were no editorial job losses as staff were reassigned elsewhere but three members of advertising and one distribution worker were made redundant.

Trinity Mirror had been in negotiations to sell the titles but a company spokesman confirmed these had fallen through last month.

He added that the company was still in negotiations over the sale of four free titles based in Northamptonshire: the Northampton Herald & Post; Wellingborough, Rushden, Kettering and Corby Herald & Post; Market Harborough Herald & Post; Brackley & Towcester Herald & Post.

The seven papers were earmarked for possible closure in August as part of a wider editorial shake-up across Trinity Mirror Midlands, including the loss of 65 jobs.

At the time, regional managing director Steve Brown said: "Trinity Mirror Midlands aims to have two core publishing centres – one in Birmingham, one in Coventry – backed up by a network of stand-alone weekly newspapers capable of contributing profitably to regional performance.

"The titles in Northampton and Long Eaton unfortunately do not meet this criteria and, regrettably, we have taken the decision to close them or to seek a sale."
