Birmingham publisher rebrands for multi-media age

The company which publishes Birmingham's two daily newspapers is rebranding in a move designed to reflect the company's transition to a multi-media business.

Birmingham Post and Mail Ltd will now be known as Bpm Media (Midlands).

Owners Trinity Mirror say the change reflects the company's evolution from a newspaper publisher to a multimedia business with an extensive portfolio of print and online products.

The new company brand also links with the relocation of the Birmingham business to new, state-of-the-art premises at Fort Dunlop next month and a major investment in new editorial, advertising and production systems in the Midlands.

Bpm Media (Midlands) will become the trading name for the Birmingham-based titles and products, with TM's wider Midlands operation also changing its name to Trinity Mirror Midlands Ltd.

A spokesman for the company said: "This is an exciting time for Bpm Media and Trinity Mirror Midlands. It reflects our ambition to prosper as a true multimedia publisher of scale."

Other Trinity Mirror regional centres have recently undergone similar rebranding exercises.

The Western Mail and Echo in Cardiff is now Media Wales while the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal is now ncjMedia.

Moving the deckchairs around on the Titanic springs to mind... 'Exciting' times indeed. A brand known by everyone is replaced by a collection of meaningless letters.

When they announce the next round of job cuts will they change the name again!

Why not go the whole hog and call it BPM Meejah. Or even multi-meejah, just like the new positions they've created for their dwindling band of hacks.

If Bpm Media is supposed "to reflect the company's transition to a multi-media business" one would assume it would use, and have, www.bpmmedia.co.uk to push the new brand? Funny move.

Here's a thought - why not buy up the web address then and cybersquat?

It's ironic this 'multimedia' change given the £1.7 million a year earning Sly Bailey has no confidence in it! http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/oct/01/slybailey.trinitymirror
