German trip yields world exclusive for Post

The Nottingham Evening Post scored a world exclusive after sending a reporter to Germany to follow-up a murder story that has rocked the city.

The death of student Matthew Pyke, who was found dead in his Nottingham flat ten days ago, has made international headlines after a fellow on-line gamer was arrested for the crime.

After 21-year-old David Heiss was arrested in Germany last week, the Post made the decision to send crime correspondent Guy Woodford to the German town of Limburg to find out more.

As well as filing a series of updates for the paper's website over the course of the weekend, Guy secured an exclusive interview with the suspect's mother which the Post splashed on yesterday.

The Post has already stayed well ahead of the nationals on the story by being first to reveal that police had made an arrest in Germany – and then to report on the suspect’s infatuation with Mr Pyke’s girlfriend.

They followed this up by flying Woodford out to Germany on Friday, as Notts officers sought to extradite him. Over the weekend he managed to track down the suspect's mother, and visited the family home in a remote village.

Post Editor Malcolm Pheby said: "Guy has done very well. He had few leads but used his nous to get the result.

"It meant we had the first family interview and invaluable colour we couldn’t have got any other way."
