Sales jobs under threat at Johnston Press

More jobs are at risk at regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press as a result of plans to close the London sales office of its recruitment website Jobstoday.co.uk.

Last week, HoldtheFrontPage reported that up to 70 printing jobs along with five distribution and one editorial post were under threat in Northampton from plans to move the Northampton Chronicle and Echo and Northants Evening Telegraph to morning publication.

Yesterday it emerged that the company is also planning to close the London offices of the national sales team for Jobstoday, which operates in the online national recruitment agency market.

Eight posts are at risk of redundancy as a result.

The company said in a statement: "The strength of Jobstoday.co.uk lies in delivering local jobseekers to local recruiters. The objective of this proposal is to focus more on the local markets served by the Group's online and in-print job offerings."

Johnston's chief executive Tim Bowdler said that the move was a recognition of the fact that the "overwhelming part" of the company's job advertising business is obtained locally.

The company has refused to comment on speculation that further job cuts are on the way, this time at its Edinburgh-based titles - the Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News and Scotland on Sunday.

Formal consultations on the proposed Northampton shake-up are already under way, and will conclude on 29 August.
