Lifestyle switch for experienced former editor

An experienced former regional press editor is returning to day-to-day journalism as the co-editor of North East Life, one of Archant's stable of lifestyle magazines.

Andrew Smith has previously edited no fewer than four daily newspapers, the Northern Echo, Bolton News, Sunderland Echo and Hartlepool Mail, along with several paid-for and free weekly titles.

He subsequently set up a media services consultancy together with Sue Campbell, a former magazine managing editor, regional newspaper journalist and head of the School of Journalism at Darlington College

Now the pair, pictured left, have been appointed co-editors of North East Life, which was launched in April this year, succeeding editor Anne Graham who will remain as a regular contributor.

Liz Page, regional managing director of Archant Life, said: "We are indebted to Anne for the skill and commitment she brought to establishing North East Life as the fastest-growing glossy magazine in the region, with excellent sales that have exceeded all expectations.

"However, we are fortunate in being able to hand over the reins to two highly-regarded and experienced editors who, I am sure, will build on the solid base that has been established by all involved with the magazine."

Andrew and Sue assisted in promoting the launch of North East Life through the media services consultancy they own, and have been closely associated with the magazine since its foundation.

North East Life is one of 54 quality magazines published throughout Britain by Archant Life. It seeks to record the positive news and events of the region through features that cover people and places, fashion, health, food and wine, homes and interiors, nature, sport and social events.

Andrew said: "Sue and I have developed a great affection for North East Life. We helped to present it to the region when it was launched and I have been a regular contributor of articles since then. Anne Graham and the team have done a terrific job in giving the magazine such a good start."

Sue added: "My experience as a managing editor of lifestyle magazines and Andrew's editorial leadership of newspapers across the North of England should equip us well to build on the excellent foundations that have been established."
