Ale lovers off the north Kent coast can toast a newspaper's 150th birthday while enjoying a new brew.

The Sheerness Times Guardian, part of the Kent Messenger Group, has launched 'STG150' to mark the special anniversary for the Isle of Sheppey weekly.

The beer was launched at a local boozer by a trio of soldiers who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Profits from the ale will go to the Times Guardian's 150th anniversary community chest which will be shared by local charities at the end of the year.

Readers will be able to get £1 off a bottle of the beer through a special voucher to be published in the paper each week.

Editor Matt Ramsden said: "A lot of hard work has gone into getting the beer produced and there are a lot of people to thank.

"As far as I know, this is the first time a newspaper has had its own beer.

"We really wanted to try new ideas out for this special year and at the same time put something back into the community.

"And what better way to launch the beer than to have some real heroes like the soldiers along."
