Journalists' union picks new deputy general secretary

National Union of Journalists members have voted Michelle Stanistreet as their next deputy general secretary.

Michelle takes over from John Fray who announced his retirement in March after more than nine years in the role.

Although the result became public yesterday, she will not be officially confirmed in the role until the National Executive Committee meets on July 24.

Michelle is currently a chapel rep at Express Newspapers where she has been working since 1999.

She was the NUJ's president for 2007/08 and sits on the NEC for national newspapers and agencies.

According to the official ballot report, the NUJ distributed 27,505 voting papers but only received 4,840 in return, seven of which were invalid.

The voting breakdown was: Michelle 2,936, John Toner 1,392, Phil Hunt 280 and Chris Youett 225.
