News editor helps launch school newspaper

The Wiltshire Times is cultivating its next generation of journalists by helping launch a school newspaper.

News editor Craig Evry spent time with pupils at John of Gaunt School, in Trowbridge, as they produced the first copy of Classified.

The team of Year 10 pupils were responsible for its content, photos and editing with Craig regularly visiting students to offer guidance and advice.

He said: "We came up with the idea as we wanted to encourage younger people to have a look at a local newspaper and see what goes into putting one together.

"We already had good links with the John of Gaunt School, in Trowbridge, so we approached them first.

"The assistant headteacher was very keen on the project from the start and put forward a team of gifted and talented Year 10s to take part.

"They were all very keen to have a go at putting their own newspaper together and came up with a basic newslist within the first week. I called in to check their progress about four or five times.

"I'm delighted with the outcome and so were they. Hopefully it will have encouraged all their classmates and fellow pupils at other schools to pick up a local newspaper and get more involved with the community around them."
