Glasgow newspapers look to future with £1m internet makeover

Newsquest Glasgow titles The Herald and Sunday Herald will operate a joint website later this year.

The change is part of an £1m internet makeover for Newsquest's three titles in the city as the company prepares for a new 24/7 online operation.

Content for the websites will be provided by journalists currently working for all three newspapers but print editions of The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times are expected to retain their own exclusive stories and identities.

The announcement comes in the middle of staff consultation at the three paper as Newsquest looks to shed around 40 jobs – 20 in editorial.

The websites will give visitors new digital content such as blogs, podcasts, video interviews and photo slideshows.

User-generated content is also expected to be included as well as interactive debate between readers.

The new development comes on the back of establishing a multimedia desk for all three titles aimed at increasing online content.

David Milne, the Sunday Herald's deputy editor, will be the new online editor.

He said: "Online is not a threat, it is an opportunity. We can significantly grow the audience for our excellent journalism by taking full advantage of the technologies available.

"We aim to be fast and authoritative on breaking news, have a rich diet of multimedia content and offer users the most comprehensive and compelling ideas and debates platform in Scotland."
