Manchester memories as MEN makes ready for Moscow

The Manchester Evening News has already begun its build up to next week's Champions League final by looking back at the previous teams crowned Kings of Europe.

The Red Devils won the then European Cup at Wembley in 1968, followed by their only Champions League title in Barcelona in 1999.

Now, the MEN sports desk is asking United fans to vote for their all-time top team by comparing the sides of '68, '99 and next Wednesday's likely line-up against Chelsea.

Each day the paper and website have focussed on a particular position and compared the players, starting with goalkeepers Alex Stepney, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

Voting is taking place at the MEN website with the star-studded Euro XI to be unveiled ahead of the Moscow final.

Meanwhile, preparations for the big night itself and the next day's editions are firmly in place.

Sports editor Peter Spencer said: "We are talking about having a wraparound for the day after and have already booked 16 pages.

"We have three editions with the first to go at 11.30pm on the night, another edition at 1.30am and then working through to about 4.30am. The third edition should go around 11am on Thursday.

"Because all the other football is now finished, we've had four or five pages per night."

The MEN is sending a sports journalist to Moscow next week to report back on the fans' experience while another football writer will be part of the official Manchester United press trip travelling to the stadium.

The news team is also sending out a reporter while the MEN's sister TV station Channel M is covering the match with a two-strong team.

Back at HQ in Manchester city centre, a further nine staff will be working through the evening until around 1am.

Peter added: "The plan is we will be doing a minimum of ten pages on sport while news will fill their bits from the front end with around three pages.

"In 1999, circulation went up by around 60,000 the day after the final but we envisage a 20,000 to 30,000 increase if they win this time.

"If United win we're intending to do a supplement celebrating the double.

"But I cannot go too far now because I would be commissioning articles we're not going to use if they lose.

"So we shall be waiting until after the homecoming ceremony to do it."
