Asylum seeker's campaign may turn on newspaper's backing

Stories from a Ham & High campaign are to form a key part of an asylum seeker's bid to stay in the United Kingdom.

Former Iranian professional footballer Afshin Azizian is launching a fresh appeal to remain in the UK, based on evidence of his activities here.

His solicitor will be presenting a new file, including coverage from a Ham&High campaign, to the Home Office later this year.

His videoed testimony describing how he came to the UK and was refused asylum was part of evidence published recently by the Independent Asylum Commission.

In the 10-minute video, he tells how his struggle had left him depressed and he had attempted suicide - only surviving one attempt as a result of the intervention of a Ham&High reporter.

He said: "If justice exists in this country I will get it. If it doesn't we will campaign until we create it. I am very grateful that the Ham & High is helping me to get that justice."
