Cornish encyclopaedia hits the web thanks to newspaper's efforts

A regional newspaper publisher has launched a new website for lovers of all things Cornwall.

Called wikikernow.co.uk, it features stories and information about the southern county from both past and present.

The site is also linked to thisiscornwall.co.uk which carries stories from Cornwall and Devon Media titles The Cornishman, Western Morning News, Cornish Guardian and West Briton.

Wikikernow is free and uses the same technology as online encyclopaedia Wikipedia meaning anyone can log on and upload their own photographs and text.

Kernow is the Cornish name for the county and the site was officially launched on St Piran's Day, national saint of Cornwall.

Andy Cooper, editor-in-chief of CDM, said: "We feel wikikernow will provide a fantastic platform for our existing readers and online viewers, and a whole range of new ones, to play their part in building a fantastic site all about Cornwall.

"The beauty of the wiki concept is that people can write and edit their own material and contribute in whichever way they see fit.

"It's already proving popular with our own staff at the trial stage and now we have launched it publicly we have high hopes that it will build and build in popularity."

Topics already online include wacky facts, local gossip, ideas for a rainy day and picturesque walks.
