An internet journalist who has been chronicling his battle with leukaemia in a blog has suffered a new setback.
But Adrian Sudbury, from the Huddersfield Examiner, is upbeat about the future – especially as he is due to get married in August.
In November 2006, Adrian was diagnosed with two distinct types of leukaemia – the only person in the world to have this condition, according to medical literature.
After being given the all clear from the disease in September, he was then diagnosed with chronic Graft versus Host Disease (cGvHD) – a side effect of bone marrow transplants that can cause skin rashes and sickness.
This was followed in December by a virus called respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which carries a 50 per cent mortality rate for people in Adrian's situation.
Now, he has been told that chronic myeloid leukaemia could be back.
Adrian, (26), said: "It's a very odd time – there are so many things to think about.
"The wedding would normally be enough to keep you busy.
"I seem to be fighting so many different things but I've always felt alright.
"Hopefully, it's not as bad as it first sounds in my blog."
As a result of the cGvHD, Adrian is much more at risk to infection than normal so is now working from home rather than the Examiner's offices in Huddersfield.
He is due for another bone marrow test in April and says it is essentially very healthy and making all the cells it's supposed to and in the right amount.
The other tests carried out on his bone marrow came back clear with the exception of just one.
This molecular test is considered really sensitive and gives a yes or no answer. It showed that there is a protein present in his marrow associated with chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Last year Adrian's Baldy's Blog won two prestigious awards – the international Weblog Award for best medical or health issue and the Guild of Health Writers Best Online Feature Award.
