Weekly news staff hit deadline despite flood evacuation threat

Staff at the Worksop Guardian were on tenterhooks as the town centre was engulfed with water on Tuesday, almost forcing an evacution of the paper's offices.

The weekly newspaper's offices on Ryton Street in the town centre are directly behind the River Ryton, and were just "three shops away" from being evacuated as the river flooded further downstream.

Deputy editor Tracy Powell said the entire street had been under water (pictured), and it was touch and go as staff met an 11am deadline for the Guardian's sister free title the Worksop Trader.

She told HoldtheFrontPage: "We were given sandbags to put at the back of the building.

"Amazingly our office stayed dry and with electricity so we were able to carry on. It was quite exciting, but difficult.

"I've been here for 18 years on and off and have never seen this before."

Tracy said there was a contingency plan in place, to go to offices of sister paper the Derbyshire Times in Chesterfield, 15 miles away, but there had been concern as to whether they would have been able to get there as many surrounding roads were closed and others were gridlocked.
