The Southport Visiter has won the right to name a teenager jailed for nine years after attacking his grandmother with a claw hammer.

Reporter Greg O'Keeffe successfully applied to overturn a Section 39 Order at Liverpool Crown Court.

He argued that the teenage boy's crime was so serious that it was in the public interest that he be named - and Judge Henry Globe QC agreed.

The 17-year-old was found guilty of attacking his 73-year-old grandmother, despite telling the court that it was his mother's partner who carried out the attack.

The boy had earlier been protected by the Section 39 Order following an application by his solictor, but once the boy was convicted Visiter reporter Greg argued that the naming ban should be lifted.

The victory meant that the Visiter could report in full the details of the attack, and publish the boy's photograph.
