Sussex S39 case:"An occupational hazard"

David Briffett said, after the hearing: "I think editors across the country will have to look at the s39 orders extremely carefully with a view to having a completely different approach, especially in relation to information outside the normal ban of name, address, school and so on.

"The witnesses involved were people with particular knowledge and that's the bit we'll have to look at very carefully.

"It was an ordeal - I've been in journalism for 45 years and editing weekly papers for 35, and it's the first time I have had to answer to a court for anything that has been published.

"It is an occupational hazard of being an editor today. You have to know your law. We are considering an appeal.

"Three sets of journalists were happy with the copy."
