Fresh bid to update voluntary code of standards for journalists

A review is under way into the Editors' Code of Practice, the voluntary code of standards for print journalists.

The Code sets the benchmark for ethical standards, protecting the rights of the individual and the public's right to know.

The Press Complaints Commission, which oversees it, hails it as "the cornerstone of the system of self-regulation to which the industry has made a binding commitment".

The committee is hoping for suggestions from inside and outside of the industry on how the Code might be revised to improve the system of self-regulation.

Suggestions should be sent as soon as possible, but no later than January 31 to: Ian Beales, Code Committee Secretary, PO Box 235, Stonehouse, Glos GL10 3UF, or by e-mail to: ianbeales@mac.com

The Editors' Code committee members are: News International's Les Hinton, Neil Benson, from Trinity Mirror's regional newspapers, Adrian Faber, of the Wolverhampton Express and Star, Mike Gilson, of The News, Portsmouth, Doug Melloy, from the Rotherham and South Yorkshire Advertiser, Ian Murray, of the Southern Evening Echo, David Pollington, at The Sunday Post, Jonathan Grun from PA, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Neil Wallis, of the News of the World, Harriet Wilson, of Conde Nast, John Witherow, from the Sunday Times and Peter Wright, The Mail On Sunday.
