Latest resolved complaints dealt with by the PCC

The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission's staff, editors and complainants.

These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.

Below are summaries of the latest complaints involving the regional press which fall into the first category.

Wigan Evening Press
David T Johnson of Wigan complained that an article re-reported the death of his son with unnecessarily graphic detail. (Clauses 3, 5)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper wrote a letter of apology to the complainant's wife.

Evening Standard
Kenneth Noye of HMP Full Sutton complained that an article was inaccurate when it stated that he had been moved to the maximum-security prison after attempting to escape Whitemoor Prison using a mobile phone hidden in a cereal box. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper – which had not placed the original story into the public domain – amended its library records to reflect the complainant’s denial of the claim that he tried to escape.

Evening Chronicle
Danielle Knox complained that the newspaper had ignored her explicit request not to publish a photograph of her four year old daughter with her father who had passed away. (Clause 5)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper wrote a private letter of apology to the complainant and ensured that pictures of her daughter were removed from its archives.

Barnsley Chronicle
Lee Taylor of Barnsley complained that the newspaper had reported the death of a member of his family accompanied by a picture of her covered by a white sheet. (Clause 5)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved privately when the newspaper wrote a private letter of apology to the complainant.

Hull Daily Mail
Robert Bottamley of East Yorkshire complained that he had not been given the opportunity to respond to allegations relating to him in a reader's letter. (Clauses 1, 2)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper offered to publish a letter from the complainant giving him the chance to clarify any points of dispute.

Crediton Gazette
Tia Cordwell of Crediton complained that the newspaper had published an article about her entry into a competition when she had expressly asked the editor not to cover the story for personal reasons. (Clause 3)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper wrote a private letter of apology to the complainant and annotated its records to reflect her concerns.

Daily Record
Zoe Polanska-Palmer of Broughty Ferry complained that an article had revealed the amount of compensation she had received from the German government. Not only was this intrusive but the amount stated was wrong. (Clauses 1, 3)
Resolution: The newspaper tagged its archive files with a note making clear that the complainant had raised concerns and that the article should not be re-used.
