The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission's staff, editors and complainants.
These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.
Below are summaries of the latest complaints involving the regional press which fall into the first category.
South Wales Echo
J Randell complained on behalf of Rhydyfelin Rugby Club that an article reported that members of the team had been charged with assault during a game. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complainant accepted the newspaper's offer to publish a follow-up article explaining that they players had since been cleared of the charges.
Ormskirk Advertiser
S Chorley complained (on behalf Gloria Watson) that she was referred to unnecessarily in a report of her sister's hearing. (Clause 9)
Resolution: The publication agreed not to refer to her again in future reporting, unless she was genuinely relevant to the proceedings.
Weston & Worle News
Patrick Morrisey of Weston-super-Mare complained that a letter, which he had not written, was published in the newspaper under his name and address. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper provided a copy of the letter which it had received from the person purporting to be the complainant and offered to publish a further letter setting the record straight.
