The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission's staff, editors and complainants.
These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.
Below are summaries of the latest complaints involving the regional press which fall into the first category.
Carmarthen Journal
A Baldwin, of Ceredigion, complained that an article referred to his numerous court appearances, when he had only ever appeared in court once as a defendant. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper offered to publish a clarification on the matter.
Kingsbridge, Salcombe & South Hams Gazette
David Hitchen of Fleet complained that an article was inaccurate when it stated that a school pictured in a nostalgia piece was named Kingsbridge School when it was, in fact, Kingsbridge Secondary Modern School. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The newspaper published a correction on this point.
Bury Times
A woman complained that an article about the death of her friend, a transsexual woman, was inaccurate and insensitive. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The matter was resolved when the newspaper explained that it understood the sensitive nature of the case and had sought to report the tragedy as faithfully as possible based on what had been heard at the inquest.
